Question

I would like to know what you think of a 4 day school week for kids? I know that my audience is pretty small here but I still would like your opinion. I'm doing an informal research project. Thanks for your imput.

My feeling is the children are going to be loosing valuable time to learn by going to a 4 day school week. The children's education is being jeopardized for the sake of cutting back? This will only give children more time to get into trouble rather then enhancing their knowledge. This would also put a burden on the family where both parents HAVE to work to make ends meet. Exactly who is benefiting from this?

I think that it is a great idea. Kids go to school for 6 hrs already, extend it out to at least 7.5. It'll make a difference. The real world work week is being cut to 4 days a week to so it would be beneficial for all including parents. 2 reasons it would be., 1, parents won't spend so much money on day care (if there is nobody at home to watch the kids) and 2, they can spend more time together during those 3 days. I think it is a fabulous idea. I work 4 days so that is probably why I say that. Less time missed from school/work for family vacations and other appointments too. It really helps out a lot.

What would be accomplished by a 4 day school week? I think students would not benefit at all, they'd just mess around and a lot would even find themselves involved in inappropriate, illegal or immoral activities. The age for formal learning needs it's main focus to be on learning and that should be every day except the Lord's day. We don't feed, dress, bathe etc. our children just 4 days of the week (although that isn't a bad idea- I'd get three whole days off)so why should educating them be any different? It's a bad idea and is of NO benefit to our children!

I believe consistency is best for children in any area of growth. I would rather they attend school every day of the week and have more balance of play and work time every day than to overwork them 4 days so they can have one day of play. I'm not sure what the purpose would be. Is it what is best for the children, or what is best/easiest for the educators? That is an important question?

Is it a matter of fitting sports into the week? I know there were a lot of Fridays in our school where many teams would have to leave early for travel time. If they are trying to accomodate sports schedules, I question which is the priority? Schooling or sports?

I also can imagine that a 4 week day would be very hard on those families in which both parents have to work. Sadly, in this economy that is the case for many.

Not for it.

Sorry, haven't formed an opinion on this topic yet cause I'm really not there yet to see how it would affect children. But, if I had to give an answer, I would say... if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it! Whoever said 5 day school weeks were bad?

I like it much better than I thought I would. I think it is because we are only on 1/2 day. I think it should be that in all grades. I love family time though and enjoy the little bit of time apart so we cherish each other more and have something different to talk about.
